Discover Pizza with Urbanbite.com

Although originally from Italy, Pizza is one of the most popular foods in existence.

With bread being one of the most ancient foods, the combination of a flatbread and different toppings such as Onions, Garlic and spices was typical to the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Modern Pizza, as we know it, was made possible by the discovery of the Americas and the Import of tomatoes from Peru in the 16th century. After a few years of people not being sure whether or not the strange new fruit (or is it vegetable?) is good to eat, a baker from Naples topped his flatbread with a juicy tomato and made culinary history.

Originally baked in wood-fired ovens and sold on the streets by Peddlers, Pizza became a tourist attraction in Naples where people flocked to the poor neighbourhoods looking for a taste of the exciting new invention.
Italian immigrant to America took Pizza across the ocean in the late 19th century where it became popular in Italian American neighbourhood. Since a whole Pizza was too expensive for most people, one of the Pizzeria owners started to cut up the pies to Individual portions – and the Slice was born.

A staple food for Italian Americans, Pizza wasn’t very popular outside of the Italian immigrant’s community. That changed after WWII. American troops serving in Italy fell in love with the food there and especially with Pizza. As they went back home, Pizzerias were starting to pop up like mushrooms.

In appose to the purists from Naples who only acknowledge two versions of pizza (Margherita - made with tomato and Mozzarella, and Marinara – made with tomato, Garlic and Oregano) the Americans allowed a wide variety of toppings on their pie, from pepperoni and sausages to different vegetables and even fruit. The U.S. is also where Pizza home delivery was established.

Today, whether it is baked by a small artisan Pizzeria or by a massive world engulfing chain, people who are not fans of this crusty wonder are very hard to find.

Probably the most popular takeaway food, Pizza loved by children and adults alike, all over the world.
